It is the first day of summer and we couldn't be more excited! Summer means longer days, more sunshine and vacations. In between soaking up sun rays and vacationing pool-side, here are a few tips to help ensure your health and home.

1. Conserve your energy.
Keep your home costs low by turning off your air conditioner and use fans or eco-friendly air coolers. The Department of Energy states that air conditioners use about 5 percent of all the energy in the U.S., producing about 100 million tons of carbon dioxide annually. If you just can't give up your air conditioner, switch to a high-efficiency unit and keep your temperature at a reasonable level, monitoring when it is on or off. Having a high-efficiency unit will also increase the value of your home. Insure your home's safety by having it installed by a professional.

2. Protect your skin
. Wearing sunscreen not only protects you from an incredibly painful sunburn and skin irritation, but helps reduce your risk of skin cancer. The CDC claims that skin cancer rates have gone up 2 percent every year since 2000. Avoiding the sun is the best possible solution to prevent skin cancer, but we know how hard that can be during the summer months. Before and during sun exposure, apply liberal amounts of a high SPF sunscreen.

3. Enjoy your local farmers markets. Farmers markets are open all year long, but something about summertime makes going to a farmers market more exciting. The sun is out, it's warm and your wearing that summer hat you've been dieing to wear all winter. Enjoy your farmers markets and choose fresh produce, verses buying produce covered with pesticides at a supermarket. Eating healthy and pesticide free ensures your health. Look at how you eat as giving you that extra coverage in your life insurance plan. How you eat greatly affects how you live and breathe. Live and breathe longer, eat healthy.

There are simple things you can do to take your insurance one step further. Protecting yourself and your home from normal wear and tear is essential to providing that extra support on your insurance. This summer, keep in mind your costs, environmental impact and most importantly, your health.

Have fun!
